Dante Canlas open to gov't service return: 'If asked, I'll serve'

Former National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) Secretary Dante Canlas has indicated his openness to the possibility of returning to government service, demonstrating a willingness to contribute once again to the public sector.

There have been rumors circulating that Canlas is among the potential candidates being considered for the final seat on the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) Monetary Board. 

When asked about his preparedness to serve again, Canlas responded affirmatively at the Philippine Center for Economic Development (PCED) lecture series on Thursday, Sept. 14.

During the discussion, moderated by ANC News Anchor Michelle Ong, a thought-provoking question arose for Canlas. 

Ong asked, "It’s been over 20 years, are you ready to go back to public service, whether in the position we're expecting for you or in another post?”

Canlas responded in a manner that piqued the audience's curiosity, saying, "Normally, my answer to that question is, if asked, I’ll serve."

However, Canlas admitted that he has been away from government for a long time, serving as a professor emeritus at the University of the Philippines School of Economics.

"I've been looking mostly developments in government, the policies, etc., from outside, from my office here at the School of Economics, and unlike Diwa [Guinigundo], my favorite columnist these days, I don't write a blog or a column," Canlas said. 

The veteran economist then shared a recurring joke he has with Romeo Bernardo, the recently appointed member of the central bank's decision-making body, whenever he reads Bernardo's column.

“Whenever I compliment him for a column… I would always say, hey, Romy I love your column today. It reminds me of the farther away we are from government, the more omniscient we become,” Canlas said.

Last Sept. 2, National Treasurer Rosalia de Leon and Bernardo, who is a former finance undersecretary, were appointed as new members of the seven-member Monetary Board.

De Leon and Bernardo now join BSP and Monetary Board Chairman Eli Remolona Jr., Finance Secretary Benjamin Diokno, V. Bruce Tolentino, and Anita Linda Aquino in the central bank's decision-making body.

The final member of the Monetary Board, however, is yet to be announced by Malacañang.
