The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) must now prioritize the registration for the African Swine Fever (ASF) vaccine, which is hoped to give relief to the businesses of ASF-weary local hog raisers.
Thus, said Camarines Sur 2nd district Rep. LRay Villafuerte after the Department of Agriculture (DA) for finally integrated an immunization plan into its control and prevention program against ASF.
“After this DA move, the next thing that the government can do at this point for swine industry players and Filipino consumers alike is for the FDA to accelerate its registration process for the local commercial use of the Vietnamese-made vaccine that has been proven effective here and abroad in safeguarding pigs and boars against the lethal ASF virus,” Villafuerte said.
The veteran congressman was referring to the recent release of the DA’s Special Order (DA-SO) 1027 series of 2023 creating an inter-agency technical working group (TWG) on vaccination against ASF.
The TWG has been tasked to craft an “inclusive multi-disciplinary and multi-sectoral approach” to carrying out an anti-ASF immunization program in the event of vaccine availability.
ASF practically has a 100 percent mortality rate with the animal and has decimated hog populations all over the country.
“It’s now for the FDA to put on overdrive its registration process for accrediting the available vaccine and allowing its commercial use in the Philippines because the implementation of an immunization drive by the DA’s BAI (Bureau of Animal Industry) is contingent on the availability of this anti-ASF drug, which, in turn, will depend on how fast—or how slow—our (FDA) can give its go-signal to the shots,” explained Villafuerte.
BAI earlier said that it had applied for a certificate of product registration (CPR) with the FDA for the Vietnamese-made Avac Live vaccine. An FDA official subsequently said that the BAI’s application was subjected to pre-assessment.
Villafuerte, majority leader of the powerful Commission on Appointments (CA) said no less than President Marcos himself claimed two months ago that the vaccine "has been proven 80 percent effective against the deadly virus".
“And as soon as the FDA accredits this drug, the BAI should waste no time in procuring vaccine doses and then implementing a nationwide inoculation program, especially for backyard hog raisers or small industry players who have yet to recover from the latest surge of ASF,” said the Bicolano.
