West Zone concessionaire Maynilad Water Services, Inc. will invest over P3 billion to upgrade 17 sewage treatment plants (STPs) in the next five years.

In a statement, Maynilad said the company will enhance the nutrient-removal capability of its 17 STPs to meet the stricter wastewater treatment guidelines set by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).

In particular, the water concessionaire said the upgrade is in compliance with the revised effluent standards, or DAO 2021-19 of the DENR.

Maynilad's largest STP in terms of volume output, the Parañaque Water Reclamation Facility, is already compliant with the revised effluent standards under DAO 2021-19.

By 2027, all 22 existing wastewater treatment plants, which collectively have a treatment capacity of approximately 684,707 cubic meters of wastewater per day, will undergo upgrades to meet the standards.

Meanwhile, the new STPs that Maynilad plans to construct in the coming years will already have the upgraded nutrient-removal processes factored in its treatment capacity design.

Maynilad’s wastewater treatment facilities remove harmful substances from the wastewater generated by Maynilad customers before it is discharged to receiving bodies of water, thus contributing to the clean-up and rehabilitation of Manila Bay.

Maynilad has allocated P178 billion for its wastewater management plan, spanning from 2023 to 2046.

Under the plan plan, Maynilad will upgrade 17 STPs, construct 18 new STPs, and install around 360 kilometers of sewer lines.

These initiatives aim to expand sewer coverage, manage pollution in bodies of water, and improve overall wastewater management.

Maynilad is the largest private water concessionaire in the country in terms of customer base.

The company holds the concession for the West Zone of the Greater Manila Area, as granted by the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS).

The West Zone includes certain portions of Manila, Quezon City, and Makati, as well as the cities of Caloocan, Pasay, Parañaque, Las Piñas, Muntinlupa, Valenzuela, Navotas, and Malabon in Metro Manila.

It also covers the cities of Cavite, Bacoor, and Imus, and the towns of Kawit, Noveleta, and Rosario in Cavite Province. (Gabriell Christel Galang)
