The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) distributed the first batch of cash assistance worth P15,000 to qualified micro rice retailers in Zamboanga del Sur, Region 9.
The region is part of DTI's announced schedule of financial aid distribution from Sept. 11 to Sept. 14 such as Dipolog, Ipil, and Zamboanga.
The DTI said they distributed the money last Sept. 11 in Pagadian City and provided P15,000 to each retailer with a business license or permit issued by the Business Permits and Licensing Office (BPLO) and those actively engaged in the sale of regular milled rice (RMR) and well-milled rice (WMR) at the time of surveillance or monitoring.
Retailers registered under the DTI as sole proprietors or registered under the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) as a partnership or corporation, actively involved in the sale of RMR and WMR during the surveillance or monitoring were also included.
The DTI said this initiative aims to provide financial support to qualified micro rice retailers who are selling RMR and WMR, pursuant to the Executive Order No. 39.
The DTI, as authorized by President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr., is in charge of conducting thorough surveillance and monitoring activities to guarantee rice sellers' compliance with the EO.
DTI was also directed to create and confirm a statewide list of rice retailers and sari-sari stores qualified for the Department of Social Welfare and Development's (DSWD) Sustainable Livelihood Program or Cash Assistance for Micro Rice Retailers.
In his message, DTI IX Regional Director Engr. Al-Zamir I. Lipae emphasized three major components of this program.
First, he stated that this is a government action targeted at instantly reducing the difficulties encountered by rice dealers.
He also emphasized that this reflects a whole-of-government approach, with multiple agencies collaborating to facilitate cash assistance distribution, including the DTI, Department of Agriculture (DA), DSWD, Interior and Local Government (DILG), and Local Government Units (LGUs).
Meanwhile, Zamboanga del Sur Provincial Governor Victor J. Yu and Pagadian City Mayor Samuel S. Co expressed optimism that the payout will help the affected micro rice traders substantially. Other municipal mayors in attendance expressed appreciation for the government's prompt intervention.
During the program, DTI also announced the forthcoming schedule of financial aid distribution, which covers Dipolog, Ipil, and Zamboanga, and extending this crucial assistance to other communities in need.
Also present during the cash assistance distribution were DTI Zamboanga del Sur Provincial Director Marlon Alabata, DSWD IX Assistant Regional Director for Operations Ma. Socorro S. Macaso, DA IX OIC-Regional Executive Director Reynaldo M. Campomanes, Pagadian City Mayor Samuel S. Co, representatives from various LGUs, and other partner agencies. (Ma. Joselie C. Garcia)
