It was an ending they did not expect. Nevertheless, the triumph in Manila came as a sweet treat for their hard work.

Germany was on cloud nine after finally winning its first Naismith Trophy courtesy of an 83-77 win over Serbia in the final of the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup, capping off a dominant run that saw the Die Mannschaft complete an eight-game sweep.
Looking back at all the experiences they encountered in the lead-up to the World Cup and the heartbreaks since the last time they landed on the podium in 2002, the Germans said the feeling was surreal and unbelievable.
“It's been a long ride. I've been here over 10 years. I think, to be here now, and last year winning the bronze medal, to be here now, coming in here going 8-0… Unbelievable,” said Schroder who was interrupted by his celebrating teammates during the post-game presser.
It was indeed a long journey for Germany to end the drought which started when legend Dirk Nowitzki won them the bronze medal. But signs, however, point upward for Germany after placing third in last year’s Eurobasket.
“Unbelievable group. We started at the end of July being together. Coach did a good job in bringing us together knowing their woes,” said Schroder.
“Everybody just brings the best to be successful. Being 8-0 in a group where we had big time teams going to the next stage, playing Slovenia and Georgia and going to the KO stage is just unbelievable,” he added.
Franz Wagner also shared the same views as Schroder, noting that winning the World Cup, much more completing a sweep, is a tough achievement to accomplish given the level of the competition.
“It’s really tough. The competition level is so high. The whole game wasn’t really easy. I think the guys that went out all did a great job. All 12 guys did a great job of playing basketball and sticking together and I think that’s a huge part of why we won as well,” said Wagner.
That’s what set Germany apart, and for Schroder, it was only fitting to celebrate the win with his teammates and their supporters.
“That's a blessing to share that with the people in the locker room, my family who came all the way from Germany, my kids, wife. It's unbelievable now,” he said.
