P6 M lost in 2 Cebu City fires

CEBU CITY – Property worth at least P6 million went up in smoke in two fires that broke out just hours apart in a barangay here on Sunday, September 10.

The first fire broke out at around 1:40 p.m. on Alviola St.  in Sitio Bless Black Blessed U in Barangay Tejero where nine houses were razed and six others were damaged.

The fire was raised to second alarm before it was put out at 2:15 p.m.

Senior Fire Officer 2 Wendell Villanueva, information officer of the Cebu City Fire Department, said a substandard ceiling fan allegedly caused the fire.

“We are encouraging the public to avoid buying these substandard ceiling fans. This is very common. These substandard ceiling fans have thin wires. When it gets hot, it easily melts. When it melts, it will fall on combustible materials and will start a fire,” said Villanueva.

The fire displaced 15 families and damage to property was pegged at P2.4 million.

Another fire broke out in the same barangay a few hours later.

“We thought the fire earlier rekindled. It turned out, it was another fire in the same barangay,” Villanueva said.

The fire started at around 8:07 p.m. in Sitio Laurente on Alviola St.

Villanueva said a man identified as Leonardo Rivera was arrested after witnesses identified him as the one who intentionally set his house on fire.

“We are preparing charges against the suspect. He was high on drugs when he set his house on fire. We have invited some witnesses, who said that they tried to reprimand the suspect but later saw the second floor of his house already on fire,” said Villanueva.

The fire reached the third alarm before it was contained at 8:44 p.m.

Damage to property was pegged at P4.2 million.

The fire, which affected 25 families, destroyed 14 houses and damaged six others.
