Water levels at Metro Manila's reservoirs close to spilling

The strengthening of the habagat, or southwest monsoon, in Northern Luzon has caused water levels to rise at Metro Manila's three main reservoirs, nearing their spilling levels.

According to the latest Dam Watch report released by Manila Water Co., the water levels at La Mesa, Ipo, and Angat Dams recorded a sudden rise on Friday, Sept. 1 compared to their levels on Thursday, Aug. 31.

At present, La Mesa Dam stands at 79.61 meters, surpassing its critical level of 69 meters and edging closer to its spill level of 80.15 meters. 

On the other hand, Ipo Dam currently measures 100.92 meters, with a mere 0.08-meter gap remaining before reaching its spill level of 101 meters.

Likewise, Angat Dam is steadily approaching its maximum capacity of 217 meters, with the current water level reaching 199.15 meters, well above the critical level of 160 meters.

On Thursday, Aug. 31, residents near Ipo and Angat Dams in Bulacan received a yellow rainfall warning. 

They have been alerted to the potential risk of flooding, particularly in areas close to the water reservoirs. (Gabriell Christel Galang)
