The Philippines and Montenegro have agreed to strengthen their ties through an exchange in tourism practices that would economically benefit both nations.

President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. said this during his meeting with Montenegrin Prime Minister Dritan Abazović in Malacañang on Thursday, Aug. 31.

In their recent dialogue, both leaders highlighted the importance of tourism to the Philippines and the possibility of adopting Montenegro's successful strategies in the Philippines and vice versa.

"Tourism has become very important for the Philippines, and we see it as an important part of the transformation of the economy," Marcos said.

"Because during the pandemic, it was zero. So, now we have to build back," he added.

The President also expressed optimism about the Philippines' potential to rebound after the pandemic.

For his part, Prime Minister Abazović commended President Marcos for his efforts to attract more tourists and investors to the Philippines.

"So, I want to congratulate you, and I am more than sure that you will play the very, very important role in the context of traveling and inviting people to visit you," he said.

The Prime Minister is in the Philippines to witness the FIBA match between Montenegro and the United States on Friday, Sept. 1.

On its website, the Government of Montenegro described its relationship with the Philippines as "good and friendly."

The two countries established their diplomatic relations on Sept. 26, 2009.
