NDRRMC records first fatality possibly related to ‘Goring’

A day after typhoon “Goring” exited the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR), the first casualty possibly related to the storm was reported by the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) on Friday, September 1.

The fatality was noted in Western Visayas (Region 6) and validation was ongoing to determine other details of the case. 

"This is still for validation if it's really related to Goring," NDRRMC deputy spokesperson Diego Agustin Mariano said.

The fatality was earlier reported missing by the NDRRMC due to Goring.

Meanwhile, the number of affected persons due to Goring has risen to 106,677 families or 387,242 individuals in 26 provinces and seven regions.

These were in Ilocos Sur (Region 1); Batanes, Cagayan, Isabela, Nueva Vizcaya, and Quirino (Region 2); Aurora, Bataan, Bulacan, Pampanga, and Zambales (Region 3); Cavite, Laguna, Batangas (Region 4A); Occidental Mindoro and Palawan (Region 4B); Aklan, Antique, Guimaras, Iloilo, and Negros Occidental (Region 6); and Abra, Apayao, Benguet, Kalinga, and Mountain Province (Cordillera Administrative Region).

Of those affected, there were 5,152 families or 21,701 individuals still staying in 293 evacuation centers.

Goring exited PAR on Thursday, Aug. 31, and was headed to southern China (international name: Saola) although its trough or extension may still affect some parts of the country.

It left a significant amount of damage in the infrastructure and agriculture sectors.

The NDRRMC said Goring dealt P395 million worth of agricultural loss in Cagayan Valley (Region 2), Central Luzon (Region 3), and Western Visayas (Region 6).

The typhoon also destroyed and damaged P41 million worth of infrastructure projects in Region 2, Mimaropa (Region 4B), Region 6, and CAR. 

A state of calamity was declared in Pototan, Iloilo in Region 6 due to the impact of Goring. A total of 5.65 hectares of rice field were destroyed by the typhoon in Pototan which amounted to a loss of more than P402,000.

Aside from Goring, Severe Tropical Storm "Hanna" is also affecting the country while enhancing the southwest monsoon (habagat).
