The Philippines overpowered South Korea, 11-1, to bolster its World Cup bid and advance to the super round in the Under-18 Women’s Softball Asia Cup at the Pingtan Softball Stadium in Fujian, China on Thursday, Aug. 31.

The Blu Girls needed a five-run onslaught in the second inning to turn a 1-0 deficit into a 5-1 upperhand and the South Koreans never had the chance to recover from there.
The Cebuana Lhuillier-backed Filipinas then scored two more runs in the third inning and another four in the fourth, mostly capitalizing on throwing and fielding errors by their beleaguered rivals that sealed their second win in three starts while booking a spot to the next phase.
There, the Nationals, which are seeking to finish in the top three to claim a berth to next year’s World Cup, tackles powerhouse Japan and a dangerous Chinese Taipei.
It was also a win that helped the Blu Girls back on their feet after absorbing a stinging 11-0 rout at the hands of the host Chinese the day before.
The Philippines’ other win came at the expense of Hong Kong, 7-0, Wednesday, Aug. 30.
“Losing 0-11 against China was a tough blow, but what defines a team is how they bounce back,” said Amateur Softball Association of the Philippines (Asaphil) president Jean Henri Lhuillier.
“I'm incredibly proud of how our girls fought back to dominate South Korea today (Thursday). This team embodies the spirit of Philippine softball: relentless and resilient to rise to any challenge that comes their way,” he added.
National team assistant coach Sheirylou Valenzuela, who is coaching the team in the absence of head mentor Lizviminda Jalandoni who couldn’t make it due to visa issues, said they would do their best to defy the odds.
“We will still play and do our best to win,” she said.
Daniela Cabangon, Che-Restcel Dela Cruz, Jeryll Duller, Ciarina Daniela Eder, Shein Espinosa, Trisha Karyl Hicayen, Angelica Jean Latriz, Rhea Manalo, Magdalene Nangan, Eileen Polvorido and Laira Dianne Silverio comprise the squad.
