Filipino Danry Seth Romualdez made heads turn at the 7th Eastern Asia Youth Chess Championship after winning the bronze medal in the standard under-8 event in Hainan, China on Thursday, Aug. 10.
The Grade 3 student of MGC New Life Christian Academy finished the nine-round Swiss system tournament with 7 points on five wins and four draws behind eventual champion Bai Moxuan of China, who clinched the gold medal with 8 points.
Mongolia’s Tseesuren Tenuun took home the silver with 7.5 points.
Romualdez actually defeated Bai in the sixth round and split the point with Tenuun in the second.
His other victories came at the expense of Tulga Lkhagvademchig of Mongolia in the first round, Dilixiati Bilali of China in the third , Munkhjargal Munkh-Orgil of Mongolia in the fifth and Beichen Zhang of China in the eight.
He drew his matches against Tianwen Chen of China in the fourth round, Zhirui Zhang of China in the seventh and Amarsaikhan Amarkhuu of Mongolia in the ninth and final round.
