PCG secures P432M satellite data communication system from Japan

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) will acquire a state-of-the art satellite data communication system from Japan that will improve its ability to monitor the country’s vast coastline and enforce maritime laws.

Japanese Ambassador to the Philippines Koshikawa Kazuhiko signed the Exchange of Notes (E/N) with Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) Secretary Enrique Manalo on Tuesday, August 8, to formalize a grant project for the PCG worth ¥1.1 billion (yen) or approximately P432 million.
The satellite data communications system will be used by 12 PCG assets that were manufactured by Japan.
These are the BRP Teresa Magbanua and BRP Melchora Aquino, the 97-meter multi-role response vessels (MRRVs) which were built by Mitsubishi Shipbuilding; and 10 units of 44-meter MRRVs namely BRP Tubbataha, BRP Malabrigo, BRP Malapascua, BRP Capones, BRP Suluan, BRP Sindangan, BRP Cape San Agustin, BRP Cabra, BRP Bagacay, and BRP Cape Engaño which were built by Japan Marine United.
“The Embassy of Japan in the Philippines said this is expected to improve the PCG's Maritime Domain Awareness (MDA) and maritime law enforcement capabilities,” the PCG said in a statement on Wednesday, August 9.
“The Embassy added this will contribute to the economic and social development of the Philippines, strengthen cooperation in the Sulu-Celebes Sea and its surrounding areas, as well as realize the ‘Free and Open Indo-Pacific’,” it added.
Department of Transportation (DOTr) Assistant Secretary for Planning and Development Leonel Cray De Velez and PCG Deputy Commandant for Operations, CG Vice Admiral Rolando Lizor Punzalan Jr. witnessed the signing ceremony.
