BUTUAN CITY – A magnitude-5.3 earthquake jolted Davao Oriental province on Wednesday morning, August 9, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.
Phivolcs said the earthquake was recorded at 8:57 a.m. and its epicenter was seven kilometers (kms) southwest of Governor Generoso town, Davao Oriental.
The tremor had a depth of only 17 kilometers.
It was felt at Intensity III in Pikit, Cotabato; Don Marcelino, Davao Occidental; Nabunturan, Davao de Oro; and Malungon, Sarangani; Intensity II Kidapawan City, North Cotabato; Matanao, Davao del Sur; Davao City, Gingoog City, Misamis Oriental; Kiamba, Sarangani; Tampakan and Koronadal City, South Cotabato, and General Santos City, and Intensity I in Magpet and Alamada, Cotabato; Magsaysay, Davao del Sur; Jose Abad Santos, Davao Occidental; Malapatan, Sarangani; Polomolok, South Cotabato, and President Quirino, Sultan Kudarat.
No damage is expected from the earthquake but Phivolcs said aftershocks could occur.
The Office of Civil Defense in Southern Mindanao and Davao Oriental Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council reported no damage or injury from the earthquake.
