Cop killed in Negros Occidental gun battle

BACOLOD CITY – A policeman was killed in a clash with the New People’s Army (NPA) in Sitio Icogon, Barangay Minapasok, Calatrava, Negros Occidental on Wednesday, August 9.

The fatality was identified as Police Corporal Jaime Nuñez of the Calatrava police station.

His two colleagues from the Calatrava police station were wounded.

Initial reports said that they were ambushed.

However, Police Capt. Judesses Catalogo, spokesperson of the Negros Occidental police, said the Calatrava police and the military were supposed to serve an arrest warrant against alleged NPA rebels in Barangay Minapasok when the encounter broke out around 9:40 a.m.

No other details were provided as of posting time.
