LEGAZPI CITY, Albay – House Committee on Ethics and Privileges Vice Chairman Ako Bicol party-list Rep. Jil Bongalon hinted that more serious sanctions will be imposed against controversial Negros Oriental Rep. Arnolfo Teves Jr. after his suspension lapsed last July 31.
During the Tarabangan Caravan of Ako Bicol party-list and local government of Guinobatan at the Mauraro Evacuation Center, Bongalon said that the camp of Teves has been given 10 days or until Monday, August 14, to answer allegations against him.
"The Committee on Ethics and Privileges acquired jurisdiction motu proprio dahil maraming pang reklamo o mga kontrobersiya o issues siyang kinakaharap and based dun sa letter that we have sent to the camp of Congressman Teves, tatlong allegations ang aming pinapasagot (Teves still faces many issues and controversies and in the letter we sent to the Teves camp, we asked him to answer three allegations)," Bongalon said.
Bongalon said these are: He was declared terrorist by the Anti-Terrorism Council (ATC), he applied political asylum in Timor-Leste, and his actuations in social media.
"There is an implication sa (in his) application, why? Because it is as if he is abandoning his duties and responsabilities as elected congressman of the third district of Negros Oriental and with that it is an insult to the institution. Pangatlo, ito po yung mga actuations niya sa social media kung saan may video circulating na sumasayaw habang naka-boxer shorts at sando. Kumbaga the image, reputation, and dignity of the House of the Representative is at stake (Third is his actuations in social media where he has a video where he was wearing boxer shorts and sando while he was dancing)," Bongalon said.
He said the House Committee on Ethics and Privileges should act on that matter as they are authorized under the 1987 Constitution to discipline their members.
Bongalon did not disclose what are these "serious" or "harsh" sanctions but hinted they are more serious.
"Hintayin po natin dahil magkakaroon po kami ng committee hearing sa Monday to discuss and recommend to the plenary what will be the proper or appropriate sanctions or penalty for Congressman Arnie Teves Jr. (We will have a committee hearing on Monday to discuss and recommend to the plenary what will be the proper or appropriate sanctions or penalty for Congressman Arnie Teves Jr.)," he said.
"Sa ngayon wala pong specific sanction or penalty kasi binigyan din natin siya ng sampung araw para sumagot as part of the due process of law and ‘yung 10-day ay mag-expire sa Monday and after that we will convene and we will deliberate, discuss appropriate recommendations (There is still no specific sanction or penalty because we have him 10 days to reply as part of the due process of law and that will expire on Monday and after that we will convene and we will deliberate, discuss appropriate recommendations)," Bongalon added.
