Six contestants of the Miss Universe Indonesia beauty filed a complaint to the police after they were allegedly forced to submit to a body check topless by pageant organizers.
The candidates claimed sexual abuse when organizers allegedly asked them to take their clothes off and examined if they had "any scars, cellulite or tattoos on their bodies," according to a report by BBC News.
Reports claimed that the incident happened two days before the finals on Aug. 3. Fabienne Nicole G. was crowned Miss Universe Indonesia 2023. She will represent Indonesia at the 2023 Miss Universe pageant in El Salvador on Nov. 18.
"I feel that my rights have been violated," one of the contestants claimed earlier this week. "It has affected me mentally. I have had trouble sleeping." alongside other complainants, earlier this week.
The report said that local television blurred their faces during the broadcasts to protect their identities.
Mellisa Anggraeni, a lawyer for three of the complaining contestants, said other candidates are expected to come forward.
Police in Jakarta said that they will investigate the complaints of the candidates.
The Miss Universe Organization claimed that it is looking into the matter "very seriously."
While body checks are normal in the country, contestants are not usually asked to strip naked, said Maria Harfanti, a former Miss Indonesia, according to BBC News.
Organizers of the Miss Universe Indonesia said they are closely monitoring the situation. The full statement:
