The Gilas Pilipinas women’s team ran out of steam and succumbed to Chinese Taipei B, 94-83, in the 42nd William Jones Cup at the Taipei Heping Basketball Gymnasium in Taiwan on Monday, Aug. 7.
After standing toe-to-toe with the hosts in the first three quarters, the shooting of the Filipinas suddenly went cold in the fourth quarter which hastened their downfall for a 1-2 record in the standings.
In contrast, Chinese Taipei clicked from deep with four triples in the final frame alone, putting Gilas’ title hopes in jeopardy.
Tai Ting proved to be the biggest thorn to the side of Gilas, drilling in 19 points on a hot-shooting 5-of-9 clip from the three-point line. She was backstopped by Zhang Yi Wen with 17 and Yu Qinhua with 15.
Afril Bernardino tried to carry the fight for the Filipinas, unloading 22 points – 13 of which coming from the second half when Gilas battled back from a 48-41 disadvantage at the break.
Jack Danielle Animam added 18 points and nine rebounds but no other Filipinas scored in twin digits to provide support for the two.
Up next for Gilas are the two teams in the upper half of the standings in Busan BNK Sum of the Women’s Korean Basketball League and the Chanson V-Magic of Women’s Japan Basketball League.
The Filipinas face the 2-1 Koreans on Tuesday before wrapping up the Jones Cup campaign against the still undefeated Japanese the next day.
