‘Saludo sa Serbisyo’

The recent 30th anniversary celebration of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) was an important event for captains of the  financial community. It provided an opportunity to hear from the newly-appointed Governor, Eli Remolona Jr.

During his speech, Governor Eli praised the Philippine economy for its resilience and strong recovery despite the challenges posed by the pandemic. He recognized the crucial role played by the local banking system in supporting the economy during these difficult times. However, he also acknowledged that there are ongoing challenges, particularly in managing declining inflation rates, which need careful attention.

Governor Eli's vision for the country's financial future emphasizes the need to embrace digitalization in the payments system. The central bank aims to increase digital transactions in the country to improve efficiency and promote financial inclusion. By making digital financial services more accessible to Filipinos, the BSP aims to empower individuals and businesses and drive economic growth.

Despite the positive developments, Governor Eli emphasized the importance of remaining vigilant and avoiding complacency. He cautioned against overlooking relatively high core inflation and potential risks on the horizon, such as external factors like the El Niño phenomenon.

The financial community left the celebration feeling  reassured, as Governor Eli's passion for central banking and comprehensive vision for the country's financial stability were evident in his speech.

Governor Eli  brings with him an impressive international career from renowned institutions like the Bank of International Settlements and the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, which makes him well-suited for his new role as the head of the BSP.

Before his current appointment, Governor Eli served as a member of the monetary board, stepping in to complete the unexpired term of Felipe Medalla, who became BSP governor after Benjamin Diokno's appointment as Secretary of Finance. Additionally, Governor Eli previously served as an Independent Director of Bank of the Philippine Islands, where he chaired the Risk Committee.

With his wealth of experience and evident commitment to financial stability, Governor Eli Remolona Jr. is well-prepared to lead the BSP and contribute to the country's economic growth and prosperity. As the new Governor takes charge, the financial community and the nation are looking forward to witnessing the positive impact of his leadership.
