Young Filipino mathletes win big in Singapore, Hong Kong competitions

A total of 36 young Filipino "mathletes," trained under the Mathematics Trainers' Guild Phils. (MTG), won more than 50 medals from international mathematics competitions held in Singapore and Hong Kong.

Team Philippines won five gold, eight silver, and 15 bronze, and 14 merit medals in the 19th Singapore International Math Competition (IMC) last July 27 to 30.

Kalel Elijah Lontok, a student from Sen. Rene Cayetano Memorial Science and Technology High School (SRCMST-HS), was one of the recipients of the gold medal and was also declared as the overall champion in the competition for the seventh grade level.

Other gold medalists were Eunice Gaerlan from BHC Educational Institution; Carlo Santino Aceret from St. Jude Catholic School; Savannah Lucia Sabeen de Guzman from St. Paul College Pasig; and Armea Helena Sien Dimayacyac from Philippine Science High School (Main Campus).

The silver medal winners were  Anne  Dorothy  Madrazo from Timoteo Paez Elementary School; Von Nicholas Unigo from First Asian Institute of Technology and Humanities; Alexis Villanueva from St. Scholastica’s Academy Bacolod; Aqeel Nikolai Mamutuk from Proj. 6 Special Science Elementary School; Luis Miguel Doligosa from Philippine Science High School (Western Visayas); Juan Alfredo Asperin from St. Jude Catholic School; Sergei Matteo So from Xavier School San Juan; and Sean Kendrick Yeo from Pace Academy.

The bronze medalists include Rudy Aldrin Turmgan from Holy Spirit Academy of Malolos; Celestina Sofia Hernandez from St. Theresa’s College of Quezon City; Nathan Keith Nierras from Phil. Pasay Chung Hua Academy; Kenzie Timothy Ong from De La Salle Santiago Zobel School; Carl Lance Garcia from Bauan Technical Integrated High School; Maricier Vily Carambas from Phil. Science High School (PSHS - Main Campus); Elizabeth Joanne King from Bethany Christian School; Megan Irish Wong from Chiang Kai Shek College; Emmanuel Gregorio and Ysaac Bethuel Panbino, both from PSHS (BR Campus); Stephanie Kyla Malazarte from Sen. Rene Cayetano Memorial Science and Technology High School; Chloe Kimberly Tan from Davao Christian High School; Seth Christopher Loo from Silliman University; Sean Chandler Wu from De La Salle University (DLSU); and Micaela Maurel Guyamin from DLSU (Laguna Campus).

In Hong Kong, the MTG team brought home a lone gold medal, won by Grade 8 student Jose Franco Domingo from the PH's-Main Campus, during the 2023 3rd Pan-Asia Pacific International Math Invitational Competition last July 28 to Aug. 1

Meanwhile, David Gabriel Reaport and Keane Timothy Lim from Zamboanga Chong Hua High School in Zamboanga City, were conferred with silver medals.

Five bronze medals were won by Yjasmin Olivia Chen from St. Agnes Academy; Antonio Pio Vivo from San Beda College Alabang; Erwin Andrei Vibal from PSHS (Main Campus); Reane Haley Wee and Sabrina Louis Cheong, both from Zamboanga Chong Hua High School.

In the team contest, the Philippines ranked second place, equivalent to a silver medal.

MTG Co-Founder Dr. Simon Chua lauded the mathletes for their "“hard work and dedication to showcasing their comprehensive knowledge of math principles."

The Filipino team leaders for the Singapore games were Eugenia Guerra, Myrna Agtarap and Arvie Ubarro. Harry Uy led the MTG team in Hong Kong.

Overall, 11 countries participated in the Singapore IMC, including so-called "math powerhouses" China, Taiwan, Indonesia, and Thailand. Seven countries competed in the Hong Kong competition.
