'Palaro' 2023 first step to sustainable nat'l sports program -- Mayor Marcy
As the 63rd Palarong Pambansa closes in Marikina City, Mayor Marcelino "Marcy" Teodoro said on Saturday, Aug. 5, that it has served as an initial step towards building a sustainable national sports program.

Since the beginning of the Palaro on Monday, July 31, Teodoro has expressed his local government's wish to put sustainability in the forefront of sports programs, especially those open for the youth.
"Palagay ko ay nakamit natin ang unang hakbang tungo sa isang national sports development program na sustainable at para sa bansa (I think we have fulfilled the first step towards creating a sustainable national sports development program for our country)," he said in a speech at the closing program at the Marikina Sports Center (MSC).
Alongside Mayor Teodoro, Vice President and Department of Education (DepEd) Secretary Sara Z. Duterte-Carpio, DepEd Asec. Francis Cesar Bringas, and Marikina District 1 Rep. Marjorie "Maan" Teodoro led the closing ceremonies.

Throughout the week, athletes, coaches, trainers, and delegates braved the heavy downpour during the opening parade and ceremony on July 31, and the games from Aug. 1 to 3. Fortunately, the weather improved from Aug. 4 to 5.
Some venues and schedules for games were changed, but there were no extensions or delays.
Teodoro lauded the efforts of everyone involved in the preparation and conduct of the Palaro.

"Lahat nagsumikap upang matagumpay na maisagawa ang pagtitipon at paligsahang ito—congratulations at maraming salamat (Everyone worked hard to make this event and the many games successful -- congratulations and thank you),”he said.
To the athletes, he emphasized that, despite the hurdles, they are "still here full of hope and strength for each other."
"Nakabuo tayo ng mas matatag na bansa sa pamamagitan ng sports (We are able to create a stronger country through sports)," the mayor remarked.
"Ang 'Batang Malakas, Bansang Matatag', ating natamo nitong mga nakaraang araw, at ito'y ating ipagpapatuloy (The [theme] 'Batang Malakas, Bansang Matatag', we were able to achieve these past days, and we will continue to follow)," he added.
Asec. Bringas declared the National Capital Region (NCR) as the overall champion of Palaro 2023. In second place is Region VI (Western Visayas), and Region IV-A (Calabarzon) in third place.
Special awards and cash prizes were also given by the local government to delegations such as the “Cleanest and Greenest Billeting Camp” that was conferred to the Region V (Bicol Region).
Meanwhile, Region XII (SOCCKSARGEN) won “Most Beautiful and Best Decorated Billeting Camp.”
During the ceremony, the host cities for the succeeding Palarong Pambansa was also announced -- Cebu City for Palaro 2024, and Ilocos Norte for Palaro 2025.
Teodoro turned over the Palaro flag to Cebu City Mayor Mike Rama.
"Saan mang lugar gawin ang ating Palarong Pambansa, iisa lamang at nagkakaisa ang lahat (Wherever place the Palarong Pambansa is held, we are still one and united)," said Teodoro.
Lastly, he thanked DepEd for the giving the opportunity for Marikina to host city the 2023 national games, and letting the city become a part of Palaro's history.
"Kahit kailangan hindi namin ito makakalimutan (We will never forget this)," Teodoro added.
Prior to the ceremony, dance performances and field demonstrations were conducted by students from the city's public schools.
After the awarding ceremony, a victory concert was held, along with a drones show, and a fireworks display.
