Land Transportation Office (LTO) chief Vigor Mendoza II has welcomed the proposal of a party-list representative for the production of special plates for all electric vehicles amid calls for the Philippines to do something about global warming.
Mendoza said he would consult the proposal to Department of Transportation (DOTr) Secretary Jaime Bautista as he concurred with the argument raised that such a move would help encourage Filipinos to shift to electronic vehicles.
“Your LTO joins the call to address climate change and we welcome this proposal as we see it as the LTO’s contribution to this global campaign,” said Mendoza.
He was reacting to the proposed law of Malasakit at Bayanihan Rep. Anthony Golez, Jr. for the government to mandate the LTO to create special plates for e-vehicles in order to encourage more Filipinos to own one as part of the global effort to protect the environment.
Mendoza said they are now confident of welcoming such proposals since they are now gradually addressing the backlogs on license plates.
“But right now, allow us to focus first on solving the backlog on license plates and to distribute the unclaimed license plates in the soonest possible time,” said Mendoza.
A number of car dealers have already started releasing hybrid vehicles in the country and one of the perks of owning such a type of vehicle is the exemption from the number coding scheme of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA)
Mendoza said the proposal would not only make it easier for traffic enforcers to identify e-vehicles but also would bring a sense of pride to the e-vehicle owners that they are contributing to environment protection.
