DAVAO CITY – Almost 300 artists from Mindanao joined the Davao leg of the Manila Bulletin (MB) Sketchfest 2023 at the activity center of the SM City Davao Annex here on Saturday, August 5.
Manila Bulletin Vice President for Circulation Dante Simangan, with SM City Davao Mall Manager Lester Tantoco, formally welcomed registered online and walk-in participants and spectators.
The MB Sketchfest, an annual event, is a well-known competition for spontaneous drawing and sketching which was initially held in Manila and later in Davao. The competition is now on its fifth year in Davao and 12th year in Manila.

Manila Bulletin Brand and Marketing Manager Mark Dy said the Sketchfest's theme for this year, "We Are All Created Equal," strives to promote harmony, embrace differences, and advocate for the rights of every person.
Tantoco said that this year's theme encompasses all themes and genres, aiming for equality in status, rights, and opportunities, encouraging participants to use their imaginations to create an awesome masterpiece.
"I remember on my social theology days, equality means helping each other. We hope that this year's theme will be inculcated in your hearts and minds," Tantoco said, referring to Sketchfest participants.
He added that the Sketchfest theme is timely in celebration of the 38th Kadayawan Festival, celebrating the rich culture of Davao City's 11 ethnolinguistic tribes. Kadayawan is recognized as King of Festivals.
"We at SM Supermall also celebrate equality. From ‘We got it all for you,’ our new tagline is ‘You are always welcome here,’ which marks a great statement that all are welcome here no matter what or who you are," Tantoco said.
Simangan said that Manila Bulletin continues doing such an event to give appreciation and importance to all artists nationwide. He added that the organizers meticulously planned this festival to accommodate people of all ages and to encourage diverse forms of artistry.
The On-the-Spot Category centers on traditional drawing and is open to participants from three age groups – Kiddie (12-years-old and below), Junior (13- to 18-years-old), and Senior (19-years-old and above).
The Digital Category, on the other hand, celebrates digital artistry and welcomes creators of all ages to showcase their skills. It is exclusively for experienced artists aged 16 and above, providing a platform for them to display their talent.
Sketchfest contestants have the chance to win exciting prizes with a total value of P50,000. For the On-the-Spot category in Davao, Cebu, and Manila – aside from the usual prizes in each – the artwork that best encapsulates AirAsia's inspiring "#AlwaysReady" campaign may earn the creators round-trip tickets for two to any domestic destination, adding an extra touch of excitement and motivation.
Sketchfest 2023 is powered by SM City Davao, SM Seaside Cebu, SM Mall of Asia, Grab, AirAsia, Radio Mindanao Networks, MultiMedia Networks Inc., iFM, National Museum of the Philippines, Park Inn by Radisson Davao, and Radisson Blue Hotel Cebu.
