Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) Commissioner Romeo D. Lumagui Jr. has been commended by the National Tobacco Administration (NTA) for his relentless efforts to combat the illicit distribution of untaxed tobacco products.
During a recent event, the BIR chief discussed the bureau's initiative in addressing the issue, which has been causing the government to lose substantial amounts of money each year.
"Illicit trade is detrimental to our economy. To attract more foreign investors, we must ensure a level playing field," stated Lumagui.
Since the start of year, the BIR has already carried out two nationwide raids on businesses involved in distributing contraband tobacco products.
Owners of these establishments are now facing tax evasion charges, authorities said.
Lumagui said the award presented to him serves as a recognition for the dedication of the men and women in the service who have been fighting against this menace.
