LOOK: Swarovski recreates Cinderella's iconic slipper

‘The slipper is the most famous shoe in the world.’

“Cinderella” is among the well-known fairy tales told to children all over the world. Its rags-to-riches story gained an even larger audience when Disney turned it into an animated film in 1950. In 2015, fans of the movie were once again delighted when the film giant released a live-action version of it. The film was an instant hit, not just because of its stellar cast, but also because of the truly magnificent costumes designed by Academy Award winner Sandy Powell.

In the film, Sandy recreated the iconic blue ball gown with the glimmering glass slipper to complete the look with the help of Swarovski. This time, the premier jewelry and accessories brand makes a replica of the slipper for a good cause.

Disney’s 100 Years of Wonder, commonly known as Disney 100, partners with the brand to create a Disney-inspired piece that will benefit the Make-a-Wish Foundation. To make it happen, the brand's global creative director Giovanna Engelbert produced a replica of the famous slipper seen in the 2015 film. Crafted by eight of the brand's artisans at its headquarters in the Austrian Alps, the Aurora Borealis crystal slipper features 221 facets and a butterfly centerpiece to complete the design. It took over 150 hours for the shoe to be finished.

“What inspired me to recreate Cinderella’s iconic crystal slipper for Disney100 is the name of the charity and the idea of a wish,” Engelbert says. “And of course, the slipper is the most famous shoe in the world. It is transformative and full of magic, so it was the perfect way to unite the world of Swarovski with the world of Disney.”

Disney 100's collaboration with Swarovski is just one of its many partnerships in the fashion industry in celebration of its century-long legacy of telling stories.
