“We are all inhabitants, residents of the digital world, a world that is heavily populated and all of us inhabit that world. Please dear young people of the Philippines, spread the influence of Jesus, the influence of truth, justice, caring for the earth, and caring for fellow human beings,” the cardinal said during a mass for the Philippine delegation to the on-going World Youth Day in Lisbon, Portugal. “Spread this influence in the world of social media,” Cardinal Tagle said. Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines – Episcopal Commission on Youth Chairman Daet Bishop Rex Andrew Alarcon presided over the Holy Mass for the Philippine delegation to the gathering which is attended by thousands of young people from across the world. “Be an influencer for Jesus. You will be a more effective influencer if you use the influence of Jesus and the Word of God. Spread the Good News in the digital world,” Cardinal Tagle said. The Church leader urged the young delegates to allow themselves to be influenced by Jesus and the Gospel and “to go ahead and influence others.” Around 1,500 delegates from different dioceses, archdiocese, religious and lay groups in the country including four representatives from indigenous communities are attending the WYD in Lisbon said the CBCP – Episcopal Commission on Youth, WYD organizers said more than 67,000 pilgrims from 126 countries are in Lisbon from August 1 to 6. Established by Pope John Paul II in 1985, the weeklong WYD takes place every three years and offers a deeper encounter with Jesus Christ through liturgical celebrations, networking, faith sharing, catechetical sessions, and prayer with the pope. The triennial event was originally supposed to take place in 2022 but the Covid-19 pandemic forced organizers to postpone the event until 2023.
