There are way fewer police officers involved in shenanigans and abuses this year compared to last year.
Thus, said Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief General Benjamin Acorda Jr. during the 2024 budget hearing Thursday, Aug. 31 of the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) before the House Committee on Appropriations.
During the hearing, ACT Teachers Party-list Rep. France Castro raised what she described as the "worrisome" spate of killings by those in uniform.
"Yung sunod-sunod na patayan, mga bata, ng mga PNP, talagang worrisome lalung lalo na yung mga bata na napapatay, at tsaka yung mga police brutality (The successive killing of children by the PNP, it's really worrisome especially the kids who were killed, and the cases of police brutality)" the Makabayan solon said.
DILG Secretary Benhur Abalos, who chairs the National Police Commission (Napolcom), asked Acordia to respond. The DILG oversees the PNP through Napolcom.
"Talagang nagkataon lang po na sunod-sunod (It's only by chance that it was successive), but in its totality, if my premise is correct, if we are going to compare police officers who were meted penalties for the previous year, almost two thousand five po," Acordia told Castro.
"And for this year, for the same period, mga almost one thousand four--bumaba po ng 85 percent," the PNP chief added.
"Going back, if my premise is correct, malayo pong mas kokonti po ang pulis na gumagawa ng kalokohan (there are way less police involved in wrongdoing now)," noted Acordia.
"And in line with that, we are assuring po this august body that the PNP is, hindi po natutulog sa mga ganitong wrongdoings (the PNP is not sleeping on these wrongdoings), we are doing our best na talagang to cleanse our ranks.
"Gusto naming makuha yung tiwala ng taumbayan (We want to gain the people’s trust)," Acordia added.
Acordia was appointed PNP chief by Malacañang only last April 24.
