ESTANCIA, Iloilo – Majority of public schools in Western Visayas officially opened classes on Thursday, August 31,
after two days of postponement due to heavy rain and flooding from the southwest monsoon enhanced by typhoon “Goring.”

The Department of Education (DepEd)-6 had to wait for local government units (LGUs) in Aklan, Antique, Capiz, Guimaras, Iloilo, and Negros Occidental as well as the highly urbanized cities of Iloilo and Bacolod to allow classes.
Only several schools in Roxas City in Capiz as well as Toboso in Negros Occidental opened classes as scheduled on August 29.
Based on DepEd-6 data, more than 1.6 million kindergarten, grade school, and senior high school students have been enrolled in public schools as of August 31.
There are 959,751 pupils for kindergarten to Grade 6, 536,784 students for high school or Grade 7 to Grade 10, and 297,869 students for senior high or Grade 11 to Grade 12.
DepEd-6 information officer Hernani Escular Jr. said 187,011 students are enrolled in private schools.
