A 4.1-magnitude earthquake jolted Ilocos Norte on Thursday evening, Aug. 31, said the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

Phivolcs said the earthquake, which struck at 9:37 p.m., had its epicenter 3 kilometers (km) southeast of Sarrat, Ilocos Norte.

It occurred at a shallow depth of 10 km beneath the epicenter.

Phivolcs said the tremor was felt at Intensity IV (moderately strong) in Sinait, Ilocos Sur and Pinili, Ilocos Norte; Intensity III (weak) in Laoag City, Ilocos Norte, and San Juan and Cabugao in Ilocos Sur; and Intensity II (slightly felt) in Bacarra, Batac City, Paoay, Pasuquin, and Currimao in Ilocos Norte.

It said the quake was tectonic, which means it was caused by the movement of an active fault near the area.

However, it does not expect damage or aftershocks because of this earthquake.
