PNP yet to decide on QCPD chief quit request over handling of ex-cop in viral road rage video
The leadership of the Philippine National Police (PNP) is yet to decide on the fate of Quezon City Police District (QCPD) director Brig. Gen. Nicanor Torre III who expressed willingness to vacate his post after social media backlash when he was accused of providing a platform for a dismissed cop to explain the viral road rage video early this month.
PNP chief Gen. Benjamin Acorda, Jr. said consultations will still be made with Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte and Interior Secretary Benhur Abalos in connection with the request of Torre to be relieved from his post.
“With the gesture of General Torre, I appreciate it very much and my respect to him for such a gesture. That’s what we need in the PNP, those with the sense of delicadeza,” Acorda told reporters in an interview.
Torre drew the ire of netizens after he was seen in a press conference with Wilfredo Gonzales, a dismissed cop who was publicly condemned when he hit and loaded in front of a bicycle rider on Aug. 8 in Quezon City.
Belmonte also expressed disappointment regarding the incident.
Torre earlier denied the allegation that he gave special treatment to Gonzales, but opted to vacate his post to shield the QCPD from criticisms.
Acorda said Torre personally conveyed his decision to him when they had a conversation on Wednesday morning.
“I respect his decision. But we have to discuss this with Mayor Belmonte and any decision would be a consensus with me, SILG (Secretary of the Interior and Local Government) Abalos and of course Mayor Belmonte,” said Acorda.
