Mayor Joy saddened by passing of veteran broadcast journalist Mike Enriquez
Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte on Wednesday, Aug. 30, expressed sadness and condoled with the family of veteran broadcast journalist Mike Enriquez who passed away on Tuesday, Aug. 29.
“On behalf of Quezon City and all its Qcitizens, I would like to express our deep sadness upon hearing about the passing of veteran broadcast journalist Mike Enriquez. Naging Saksi po tayong lahat kung paano siya naging bahagi ng buhay ng napakaraming Pilipino (We all witnessed how he became a part of the lives of so many Filipinos). In this time of profound loss, our thoughts and heartfelt condolences go out to his wife Baby, his family, his friends, and the countless people who loved him,” Belmonte said in a statement.
“Throughout his illustrious career, Mike showcased an unwavering dedication to the truth, and a genuine passion for storytelling. He had a unique ability to capture the essence of every story, delivering news with both empathy and professionalism,” she added.
The death of Enriquez, 71, was confirmed by GMA Network on Tuesday during the airing of “24 Oras,” the station’s flagship program which the veteran broadcast journalist anchored since 2004. His cause of death was not disclosed.
According to GMA News Online, Enriquez battled kidney disease and had to take a medical leave in December 2021 to get a kidney transplant.
He also took a medical leave in 2018 to undergo heart bypass and treatment for his kidney disease, it added.
GMA said that Enriquez wholeheartedly served the Filipinos for 54 years joining the broadcast industry in 1969 and its network in 1995, hosting many of its news programs.
Enriquez won numerous awards for his service, including an “Award of Excellence in the Field of Broadcasting” from the School Press Advisers Movement, Inc. (2013); “Best Newscaster Award” from the Asian Television Awards in Singapore (1999); “Best AM Radio News Anchor” at the COMGUILD Awards for Radio and Television (2018), among others.
“As we mourn his passing, let us also celebrate the legacy he leaves behind. Bilang isang Kapuso at pangunahing miyembro ng liga ng katotohanan, he inspired many individuals to engage with the world around them and strive for a better, more informed community (As we mourn his passing, let us also celebrate the legacy he left behind.
