Manila LGU suspends gov't work, classes due to inclement weather

The City of Manila local government announced the suspension of work in government offices and classes in the city on Thursday, August 31, as the southwest monsoon and Super Typhoon Goring brought heavy rains to Metro Manila.

"As recommended by the Manila Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, classes are suspended today, August 31, Thursday, for all levels, public and private, face to face and online," Manila Mayor Honey Lacuna-Pangan said.

She said work at the Manila City Hall and its satellite offices is also suspended today, except for the departments and offices involved in disaster and emergency response.

Manila Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRMO) reported gutter-deep and half-tire-deep floodwaters along España Boulevard, U.N Avenue, Padre Faura, Recto Avenida, Remigio Taft, Bambang, L. Guinto corner Quirino, and A. Linao corner Quirino as of 5:20 a.m.

It said motorists along España Boulevard and Taft Avenue may experience moderate to heavy traffic.

As of 7 a.m., it announced that Maceda to Lacson Avenue is not passable to small types of vehicles.

The city government assured transportation aid to affected commuters in the city.

"Mayor Honey has also activated the OPLAN: Libreng Sakay for possible stranded passengers," it said.

Operations at the Manila Zoo are likewise suspended. Tickets purchased for today's admission may be used within one week from today.
