Super typhoon Goring (international name: Saola) left the country’s area of responsibility Wednesday evening, Aug. 30, prompting the lifting of all tropical cyclone wind signals in Northern Luzon.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) last located the center of the eye of Goring 265 kilometers west of Itbayat, Batanes at 10 p.m.

It has maintained its maximum sustained winds of 195 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gusts of up to 240 kph.

Although it is already outside the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR), PAGASA said the trough or extension of Goring may still continue to bring heavy rains to Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, Abra, and the western portions of Pangasinan and Apayao until Thursday, Aug. 31.

Meanwhile, the severe tropical storm with the international name “Haikui” entered the PAR Wednesday evening, and was given a local name “Hanna.”

Hanna was last spotted 1,335 kilometers east of extreme Northern Luzon, moving northwestward at 15 kph with maximum sustained winds of 95 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 115 kph.

“On the forecast track, this tropical cyclone is forecast to remain far from the Philippine landmass and may exit the PAR on Friday afternoon or evening (Sept. 1) while approaching the Ryukyu Islands,” PAGASA said.

However, the southwest monsoon, or “habagat,” enhanced by Goring and Hanna may bring occasional rains over the western portions of Luzon and Visayas, including Metro Manila, over the next three days.

PAGASA said the habagat is also being enhanced by another tropical storm, with the international name “Kirogi,” which is currently outside the PAR.

“Under these conditions, flooding and rain-induced landslides are expected especially in areas that are highly or very highly susceptible to these hazards as identified in hazard maps and in localities that experienced considerable amounts of rainfall for the past several days,” PAGASA warned.
