Gilas Pilipinas was swept in the group stage of the FIBA Basketball World Cup the country is co-hosting with Japan and Indonesia, and fans were not happy about it and vented their ire on head coach Chot Reyes.

The National, however, were quick to defend the longtime national coach despite the displeasure of the crowd in the venue and the Filipinos voicing their anger on the internet.
"It is just a little weird, especially us hosting and us being a home country. But, like I don't really know about the situation, but it does, at that point, feel a little weird," NBA star Jordan Clarkson said.
Kiefer Ravena also expressed his thoughts on the hate pointed towards Reyes.
“I know it’s been happening, but I’m gonna play for my coach ‘til the wheels fall off. This is something that I have to lead by example, [kami] ni Japeth [Aguilar] and most of the guys that have been here,” Ravena said.
“It wasn’t the first time that’s happened, ‘di ba? Parang alam niyo naman yun. Lalaban kami. Again, we have to use this crowd as an advantage, not a disadvantage ‘di ba? Yun naman ang pinaka rason kung bakit natin dinala ‘tong event na ‘to dito,” he added.
Abando also asked for the support for the national team and extended his love for the fans who continued to cheer them.
“'Yun lang, kailangan namin ma-flip yung script na gawin namin siyang advantage kaysa kabahan kami, yung hindi kami nakakapaglaro nang maayos kasi naririnig namin kung ano yung ginagawa ng crowd. Pero at the end of the day, nagpapasalamat pa rin kami sa mga sumuporta pero sana from this stage on, malapit na rin namang matapos, suportahan niyo na lang kami,” Abando stressed.
The Anyang KGC guard said Reyes has nothing but one mission in mind and that is to make the country proud.
“Tao lang tayo, nagkakamali. Hindi ito ‘yung right time para sisihin kung sino man. Tao lang tayo, nagkakamali. Pinaglalalaban nya ‘yung bansa natin. Pinaglalaban namin. So dapat, sinusuportahan nyo pa rin siya kasi ayun nga, nagkakamali rin tayo,” Abando expressed on Reyes.
Gilas dropped three games in Group A, first against the Dominican Republic, 87-81, followed by a disappointing defeat against Angola, 80-70, and lastly against Italy, 90-83, last Tuesday, Aug. 29.
Clarkson topped the scoring anew with 23 points, seven rebounds and six assists followed by Dwight Ramos who scored 14. Roger Pogoy registered nine points while Abando, Ravena and AJ Edu had eight points apiece.
