Domestic motorcycle sales could hit 1.6 million units this year, breaching the 1.5 million sales last year, as steady growth is expected for the entire year, the Motorcycle Development Program Participants Association (MDPPA) said.
On Wednesday, Aug. 30, MDPPA reported that its first semester sales already hit 932,220 units, 4.6 percent higher than the 890,720 units sold in the same period last year.
MDPPA, which is composed of OEM (original equipment manufacturers) Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki, and Yamaha, cited the January-July sales as a milestone for the group.
MDPPA President Norminio "Boying" Mojica shared that they conducted a comprehensive review of its sales targets for the balance of the year.
Unanimously, he said, its members agreed to achieve a modest yet steady five percent growth rate for motorcycle sales from August to December.
Mojica said that the sales performance during the first semester of this year could potentially mirror that of the subsequent semester.
This aspiration, he said, aims to culminate in an impressive cumulative sale of 1.6 million units by the end of 2023, surpassing the already remarkable 1.5-million sales achieved in the preceding year.
The MDPPA, however, expressed hope that the projected growth may be spared from significant impact of global and local economic factors. These elements include rising prices and the lingering impacts of the pandemic, such as supply chain issues and a mix of rise on in-person and remote work setups, have contributed to a situation of slower growth.
“Drawing from historical trends, the months of September, October, and November have consistently exhibited heightened sales volumes, whereas the months of August and December have maintained an average profile in terms of monthly sales," he added.
This observation underscores MDPPA’s capability to recognize the seasonal fluctuations and analyze motorcycle sales patterns in the country.
