Zubiri: PBBM well aware of Senate's stand on West PH Sea issue

Zubiri said the matter regarding the Senate’s resolution on the West Philippine Sea (WPS) was briefly discussed during their dinner with the President on Wednesday night. The meeting he said was “cordial and casual” and 21 senators were present in the meeting with the President who was there “mostly just to catch up and bond with the members of the Senate.” “Several topics were discussed from the current flooding to Agriculture and even about the West Philippine Sea (WPS),” Zubiri said. “The President is well aware of the stand of the Senate on the WPS issue and respects the sense of the Senate regarding this issue. We reported that the resolution was discussed together with (Foreign Affairs) Secretary (Enrique A). Manalo so that were in the same page with the Executive,” the Senate leader also pointed out. "We didn’t dwell much on that topic as we wanted to keep the dinner a cordial and casual get together," he added. Earlier, the Senate passed a resolution giving the President five options on how to deal with the aggressive incursions of Chinese Coast Guard in the country’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and the Philippine victory over China in the United Nations Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA) on their competing territorial claims. Notably absent during the meeting were Senate Minority Leader Aquilino Pimentel III and Senate Deputy Minority Leader Risa Hontiveros. President Marcos’ elder sister, Sen. Imelda “Imee” Marcos, attended the event. Senate President Pro Tempore Loren Legarda was also present. Senator Francis "Chiz" Escudero said he was not able to attend it due to a previous engagement. The President also celebrated Senate Majority Leader Joel Villanueva’s 40th birthday. Villanueva said he was seated with the President the whole time "kaya marami na discuss.. for sure (that’s why many issues were discussed…for sure)." He revealed that the President would sign the "Trabaho para sa Bayan" bill once it is passed at the House of Representatives. Sen. Ramon "Bong" Revilla Jr. had earlier announced that his Senate public works committee would start next week its hearing on the unsolved flooding problems in the country, particularly Villanueva’s Bulacan home province. Villanueva complained on the Senate floor that the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has a flood control master plan but this yet to be implemented. The Senate majority leader lamented that Bulacan has an anti-flood control appropriation of P1.7-billion this year and a PH-wide flood control budget of P183-billion.
