The Philippine Red Cross (PRC) has issued a cautionary alert to the public regarding the potential threat of leptospirosis following the recent onslaught of Typhoons Egay and Falcon which have triggered heavy rainfalls and led to floods across several areas nationwide.

PRC Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Richard Gordon stressed the importance of safeguarding public health against leptospirosis. "Our priority is the safety and well-being of every Filipino. Leptospirosis can pose a serious threat during this time, and it's crucial that we take preventive measures to protect ourselves and our loved ones," Gordon said in a statement on Thursday, Aug. 3. Meanwhile, PRC Secretary General Dr. Gwen Pang, on her part, elaborated on how leptospirosis can affect people. "Leptospirosis is a potentially life-threatening bacterial infection that can enter the body through various means, including open wounds," she said. "The floodwaters and damp environment created by the recent typhoons provide an ideal breeding ground for this bacteria," she said. PRC added that leptospirosis is caused by the Leptospira bacteria, which thrives in water contaminated with rat urine. The symptoms of leptospirosis include high fever, eye redness, abdominal discomfort, diarrhea, joint pain, and vomiting. And "Swift action" is essential if any of these symptoms are observed, PRC said. The PRC also provided guidelines to mitigate the spread of leptospirosis. First, if possible, individuals are advised to "refrain from wading through floodwaters" particularly if they have open wounds. Gordon emphasized that "direct exposure to contaminated floodwaters significantly heightens the risk of leptospirosis. Prioritizing personal safety is paramount." Second, wearing protective gear such as "gloves and boots" is strongly recommended for individuals who must traverse flooded areas to minimize direct contact with potentially contaminated water. Lastly, maintaining hygiene practices, including thorough hand and skin cleansing after encountering floodwaters or items that could potentially carry contamination, is essential. *(Rhowen Del Rosario)*
