More Filipino families experienced hunger in past 3 months — survey
The Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey results released on Wednesday, Aug. 2 bared that more Filipinos families have experienced involuntary hunger at least once in the past three months.
SWS said 10.4 percent of Filipino families experienced involuntary hunger, up from 9.8 percent in March.
It defines involuntary hunger as being hungry and not having anything to eat.
Hunger rates highest in Metro Manila, lowest in Mindanao
SWS said the experience of hunger was highest in Metro Manila at 15.7 percent. Balance Luzon, or Luzon outside of Metro Manila, came in second with 11.3 percent, followed by the Visayas with 9.3 percent, and Mindanao with 6.3 percent. “The 0.6-point rise in overall hunger between March 2023 and June 2023 was due to increases in Metro Manila and Balance Luzon, combined with a steady percentage in the Visayas and a sharp decline in Mindanao,” SWS noted. Compared to March 2023, the incidence of hunger rose by five points in Metro Manila, from 10.7 percent to 15.7 percent, and by 2.6 points in Balance Luzon, from 8.7 percent to 11.3 percent. However, it hardly changed in the Visayas, moving from 9.7 percent and 9.3 percent, while it fell by 5.4 points in Mindanao, from 11.7 percent to 6.3 percent.Severe vs moderate hunger
According to SWS, the 10.4 percent hunger rate in June 2023 was the sum of 2.1 percent who experienced severe hunger and 8.3 percent who experienced moderate hunger. Severe hunger refers to those who experienced it “often” or “always” in the previous three months, while moderate hunger refers to those who experienced hunger “only once” or “a few times” in the last three months. Compared to March 2023, severe hunger rose slightly from 1.2 percent, while moderate hunger hardly moved from 8.6 percent. In Metro Manila, severe hunger rose from 1 percent in March to 3.7 percent in June, while moderate hunger went up from 9.7 percent to 12 percent. In Balance Luzon, severe hunger and moderate hunger rates also rose from 1 percent and 7.7 percent to 3 percent and 8.3 percent, respectively. Meanwhile, in the Visayas, severe hunger hardly moved from 0.7 percent to 1 percent, while moderate hunger fell from 9 percent to 8.3 percent. In Mindanao, severe hunger and moderate hunger rates fell from 2.3 percent and 9.3 percent to 0.3 percent and 6 percent, respectively. The Second Quarter 2023 SWS Survey was conducted from June 28-July 1, 2023, using face-to-face interviews of 1,500 adults nationwide. The sampling error margins are ±2.5 percent for national percentages, ±4.0 percent in Balance Luzon, and ±5.7 percent each for Metro Manila, the Visayas, and Mindanao.
