From a proven leader to young, budding leaders.
Marikina City 2nd district Rep. Stella Quimbo led on Tuesday afternoon, Aug. 29 the awarding ceremony of 20 youth leaders in connection with the Marikina Youth Leadership Award (MYLA).
The awarding rite was held at the north extension lounge of the House of Representatives in Quezon City.
But before any medals were distributed to the eager students and proud parents, economist-solon Quimbo shared to the audience what being a true leader means.
"Tandaan na dalawa ang sukat sa pagiging isang magaling na leader. Una, ang inyong kakayahan mamuno ng iba. At pangalawa, ang kakayahan na mamuno ng sarili," said the senior vice chairperson of the House Committee on Appropriations.
(Remember that there are two standards to being a good leader. First, your ability to lead others; and second, the ability to lead oneself.)
"Natural na sa mga lider na isipin ang kapakanan ng iba. Subalit, kailangan din isipin ang kapakanan ng sarili. Kailangang nasusuri rin natin ang takbo ng ating sariling buhay. Hindi sapat ang maging magaling, dapat ay mabuti rin," the veteran legislator inculcated to the youngsters.
(It's natural for leaders to think about others' welfare. But you should also think about your welfare. We also need to study the development of our own lives. Being skilled isn't enough; your must also be a good person.)
The MYLA recognizes outstanding graduating students from Marikina public elementary and secondary schools who have shown exceptional leadership and academic excellence. Apart from a medal of recognition, MYLA awardees also receive a cash grant of P10,000.
The MYLA--a brainchild of Teacher Stella's--was initiated as a way to elevate the quality of education for the Marikina youth as it aims to inspire others to excel in their field and reach their full potential.
The awarding ceremony was graced by no less than Speaker Martin Romualdez, leader of the 311-strong House.
“I commend Teacher Stella’s foresight in spotlighting these dual achievers, for they are truly the city's pride. These individuals … embody the principles of MYLA: valuing others, extending help to those in need, and playing a pivotal role in community building,” said Romualdez.
“To the awardees: Your recognition today is a testament to your hard work, commitment and the values you hold dear. Beyond the certificate and the gift you will receive, may you carry the essence of this award with you - that in every action, in every decision, you have the power to create a ripple of positive change in your community,” Romualdez said.
“Marikina has always been a beacon of innovation, resilience and community spirit. Today, our MYLA awardees show us that our city's future remains in capable, compassionate hands. Continue to shine, lead and inspire,” he further said.
