Makabayan bloc member Gabriela Party-list Rep. Arlene Brosas gave some rare words of praise on Tuesday, Aug. 29 to Malacañang's communication arm.
The reason? The lack of red-tagging under Secretary Cheloy Garafil.
Brosas highlighted this observation during the House Committee on Appropriations' hearing on the 2024 budget of the Presidential Communications Office (PCO). Garafil, a lawyer, heads the PCO.
"Madam chair, year in, year out nagtatanong po lagi ako sa PCO. Palagi po iyon (I always ask questions to the PCO. Always)," the militant lawmaker said, as if she was about to grill Garafil.
"But this time, magtatanong po sana ako (I was supposed to ask questions). But since napansin ko po na hindi niyo policy ngayon, ng PCO in particular, ang red-tagging, hindi na po ako magtatanong (But since I've noticed that red-tagging isn't a policy now of the PCO in particular, I'll no longer ask questions)," Brosas said.
"Keep it up, Sec! It's a good thing, no. No the red-tagging. Maraming salamat po (Thank you very much)," the Makabayan stalwart added for good measure.
Garafil was seen with a big smile following Brosas' manifestation. After this, Senior Deputy Majority Leader and Ilocos Norte 1st district Rep. Sandro Marcos moved for the termination of the PCO budget hearing.
The PCO budget hearing lasted just over two hours.
"Red-tagging" is the act of linking or associating a person or group to the communist movement.
