Andres Feliz and Victor Liz delivered the killing blows in the final frame where the Dominicans created the much-needed separation to complete a sweep of the Group A standing with a perfect 3-0 record.
The Dominican Republic’s victory also left a window open for the host Gilas Pilipinas to advance to the second round if it manages to win by at least 13 points against Italy in the game that will be played 8 p.m. later.
Feliz led the way for the Dominicans with 17 points – nine of which came in the payoff period when Angola stayed too close for comfort even in the absence of NBA big man Bruno Fernando.
Liz also picked up the slack with 13 points as Towns, after averaging 25 points in the first two games was limited to just eight after sitting out for the most of the first half due to three fouls in the first four minutes of the game.
Angola tried to take advantage of Towns' absence and managed to snatch the lead from Dominican Republic late in the third frame, 50-47.
Momentum, however, slowly shifted to Dominicans after Fernando picked up his fifth and final foul with 5:30 left in the final frame. Silvio De Sousa tried to will Angola back, pouring 12 of his 19 points in the fourth quarter, including the dunk that tied the knot at 65-all with 2:26 left.
That was when Liz and Feliz, however, took over for the Dominicans to ensure their team would be carrying over a perfect record to the second round.
