ILOILO CITY – The Department of Education said that 3,848 public schools in Western Visayas postponed the opening of classes on Tuesday, August 29, due to incessant rain and flood.

“With the class suspension declared by local government units (LGUs), it followed that there’s also cancellation of classes,” said Hernani Escular Jr., information officer of the Department of Education-6.
“But while the majority of schools cancelled in the region, some schools went ahead as scheduled as mayors did not cancel,” Escular added.
Public schools in Roxas City, the provincial capital of Capiz, did not postpone the start of school year 2023-2024.
Public schools in Toboso, Negros Occidental also did not cancel the opening of the new school year.
Iloilo province, with 42 towns and the component city of Passi, had the most number of schools that cancelled classes with 1,172.
Aklan was second with 535, 493 in Negros Occidental, 446 in Capiz, 370 in Aklan, 114 in Guimaras, 70 in Bacolod City, and 66 here.
DepEd-6 is awaiting formal annoucement from mayors before suspending classes.
