2 man nabbed for violating gun ban in QC

Two men were arrested by members of the Quezon City Police District (QCPD) for illegal possession of firearms on Monday, Aug. 28, the first day of the gun ban and election period for the upcoming Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE) which will be held on Oct. 30.

Police identified the suspects as Jomar Dela Cruz, 32; and Rino Veñales, 52, both from Quezon City.

Dela Cruz was arrested by QCPD Novaliches Station (PS 4) members who were manning a checkpoint in front of a gasoline station on Quirino Highway, Brgy. Gulod Novaliches, Quezon City, at around 1:30 a.m. on Monday.

The QCPD said PS 4 personnel flagged down the suspect’s Rusi motorcycle for not wearing a helmet while driving.

It added that Dela Cruz sped away when the operatives asked for the pertinent documents of his vehicle which led to a brief chase and his arrest.

Seized from the suspect were an improvised tubular firearm (sumpak); two pieces of 12 gauge live ammunition; a sling bag; and the Rusi Motorcycle.

Meanwhile, Veñales, was arrested by operatives from the Holy Spirit Police Station (PS 14) at around 3:40 a.m. in Barangay Pasong Tamo on the same day

Police said they received a report from a concerned citizen regarding an armed man who was causing disturbance in the barangay which caused fear among the residents.

Responding P2 14 personnel went to the area and arrested the suspect after they confiscated an improvised tubular firearm and two pieces of 12 gauge live ammunition from him.

The suspects will be charged for violation of Republic Act 10591 or the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act, police said.

An additional charge for violation of Article 151 of the Revised Penal Code (RPC) or the Resistance and Disobedience to a Person in Authority or the Agents of Such Person, and R.A. 10054 or the Motorcycle Helmet Act of 2009 will be filed against Dela Cruz, it added.
