BACOLOD CITY – A sugarcane field worker or “sacada” died while two others were injured after they were allegedly hacked by their distant relative inside their barracks in Hacienda Candelaria, Barangay Baliwagan, San Enrique, Negros Occidental on Sunday, August 27.
Police identified the fatality as Gilbert Brinio, 24, of Culasi, Antique.
Police Major Leo Estopa, San Enrique police chief, said the victims were sleeping when suspect Raymund Langote attacked Brinio.
Brinio’s relatives – Elmer Langote and Ronaldo Anacleto – both residents of Culasi tried to pacify the suspect but he also hacked them.
The victim was declared dead while Langote and Anacleto are recuperating in a hospital, according to Estopa.
Estopa said the suspect was wounded after he tried to slash his neck while fleeing.
The suspect was arrested in Barangay Old Baliwagan through the help of Barangay Guintorilan officials.
Estopa said that grudges against their farm overseer triggered the suspect to commit the crime.
But according to their overseer, he had no altercation or misunderstanding with the suspect.
The suspect’s co-workers believed that he may have a problem, Estopa said.
