PNP sets up checkpoints as gun ban for barangay polls starts
Police forces across the country have started setting up checkpoints to reinforce the implementation of the gun ban as part of the security measures for the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections (BSKE).
PNP chief Gen. Benjamin Acorda, Jr. said he had already instructed all police units to implement strategic security measures to address election-related violent incidents, as he noted that barangay elections are known to be more security challenging based on historical data.
"Checkpoints have been installed in different areas of the country, with members of the PNP together with the AFP to monitor and inspect, and to strictly implement the gun ban,” said Acorda.

The gun ban for this year’s barangay elections took effect at 12:01 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 28, which coincided with the start of the filing of the certificate of candidacy for all the candidates.
For a total of 94 days, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) prohibits the unauthorized bearing, carrying, or transporting of firearms and deadly weapons outside residences, businesses, and public places, based on the poll body's Resolution No. 10918.
According to the resolution, personnel from the PNP, the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) and other members of law enforcement agencies are exempted from the gun ban, provided that they obtain authorization from the Comelec.
But members of the law enforcement agencies are required to wear their prescribed uniforms during their official duties for the entire election period to be exempted from the gun ban.
‘Tamang bihis’, 'tamang asal'
In Mimaropa, Police Regional Office 4B director Brig. Gen. Joel Doria instructed police officers tasked to man checkpoints in the region to wear proper uniform and conduct the checkpoint in proper and legal ways
"I remind every PNP personnel in the region manning the Comelec checkpoints to observe courtesy at all times and strictly adhere to the PNP's standard of conduct and behavior,” said Doria.
"Let us work together and remain vigilant in upholding PRO MIMAROPA’s aggressive stance against all forms of criminality while we give our best to maintain peace and order during this election period," he added.
Doria led the red-teaming and inspections of checkpoints on Monday, Aug. 28, in Calapan City and other parts of Oriental Mindoro to ensure that all the checkpoints that would be set up are compliant with both the PNP and Comelec rules.
Appeal
Acorda appealed to the public to avoid carrying firearms during the ban and warned that violation of this prohibition will constitute an election
“We ask for the cooperation of the people with firearms to avoid bringing them in public, so that you will not face any charges before the court,” he said.
