3 Filipino trafficking victims repatriated to PH after spending more than a month in China jail

Three Filipino trafficking victims, who spent more than one month in jail in China, have been repatriated to the Philippines.

 

Immigration Protection and Border Enforcement Section (I-PROBES) Chief Ann Camille Mina said that the three women arrived onboard a China Southern Airlines flight from Guangzhou, China last Aug. 24.

 

Mina said the three Filipinas are all in their forties and were recruited to work either as waitresses or household workers.  She did not give their names.

 

In a report submitted to Bureau of Immigration (BI) Commissioner Norman Tansingco, Mina said that the women all left the country as tourists. They were reportedly scammed as they believed false promises of receiving work visas in China, she said.

 

She reported that the three women were arrested by immigration police in China for overstaying, and they spent more than a month in jail. Thankfully for them, authorities from the Philippine Consulate in Guangzhou intervened and assisted their return to the Philippines, she said.

 

Mina said that upon their arrival in the country, the women were given assistance by the Inter-Agency Council Against Trafficking (IACAT).

 

Tansingco warned Filipinos to be more careful about looking for jobs abroad as he pointed out that they should never resort to illegal processes no matter how promising the job offers might be.

 

"This is but one of the possibilities that our kababayans may face if they work illegally abroad," said Tansingco as he urged “aspiring overseas workers not to resort to illegal means to be able to work."
