Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte on Sunday, Aug. 27, ordered the Quezon City Police District (QCPD) and the QC Law and Order Cluster to conduct an investigation on the road rage incident involving a man who allegedly pulled out  a gun and physically assaulted a cyclist near the corner of  Welcome Rotonda and Quezon Avenue, in the city last Aug. 8.

“Mariing na kinokondena ng lokal na pamahalaan ang panunutok ng baril laban sa isang siklista na naganap sa may Welcome Rotonda, Quezon City (The local government strongly condemns the pointing of a gun towards a cyclist that occurred near Welcome Rotonda, Quezon City),” the city government said.

The QCPD said the incident happened at around 6 p.m. on Aug. 8, where the cyclist allegedly bumped the rear portion of a red sedan driven by Willie Gonzales which led to a heated argument between the two.

In a video that went viral on social media, Gonzales was seen hitting the head of the cyclist with his right hand. He was also seen drawing a handgun during the incident.

Police said Gonzales immediately went to the QCPD headquarters in Camp Karingal after he saw the Facebook comment on the video of QCPD Director Brig. Gen. Nicolas Torre III who urged him to surrender.

Gonzales said that he and the cyclist were able to talk about the incident while they are at the PS 11 on the same day, which led to an agreement resolving the issue.

He also voluntarily surrendered his handgun to PS 11, the police said.

“Sumuko na sa QCPD ang lalaki.  Inaalam na rin kung may lisensiya siya sa pagdala at paggamit ng baril (The man surrendered to the QCPD. It is also being investigated if he has a license to carry and use a fireaarm) ,” the city government said.

It added that they are also reviewing the closed-circuit footage in the area to learn what really happened during the incident.

The city government said that it will ensure the man will be held accountable for his violation during the incident.

It also appealed to the cyclist to coordinate with them during investigation.

“Walang puwang ang paggamit ng dahas sa buong lungsod ng Quezon City (The use of violence has no room in Quezon City),” the local government said.
