The local government of Cainta, Rizal lauded the heroism of three barangay tanods who were shot and killed by a man who ran amuck in Cainta, Rizal on Saturday, Aug. 26.

Cainta Mayor Elen Nieto identified the three members of the Barangay Public Safety Office (BPSO) or the barangay peacekeepers (commonly referred to as barangay tanod) as Romeo Cortez, Ronnie Gonzalez, and Roberto Donor.
"I salute your bravery and I am very grateful for your service to our town. My prayers are with you," read part of Nieto's message on her social media page.
Cortez, Gonzalez, and Donor were the three tanods who responded to a call for assistance from a neighbor who was mauled by the suspect, identified as James Jazmines, 68, at Greenland Subdivision in Barangay San Juan at past 3 p.m. on Aug. 26.
Mayor Nieto, in the same post, also urged the residents to honor the three fallen tanods, especially on the day that the country is celebrating National Heroes Day on Aug. 28.
Administrator Johnielle Keith Nieto, in a separate post on social media, also recognized the bravery of the three tanods.
"Thank you for the years of unsullied dedication. Thank you for the ultimate sacrifice to pursue your call of duty. Your deeds shall not be forgotten. And I pledge a secured future for the families you have left behind," Nieto said.

A report from the Rizal Police Provincial Office showed that the three barangay tanods, along with two other barangay peacekeepers, responded to the report of a resident who was reportedly being mauled by Jazmines.
Upon arriving at the area, the suspect reportedly shot the victims, including the subdivision security guard Bernard Sales, pointblank using a US caliber 30 Carbine when they attempted to arrest him.
When policemen arrived and responded to arrest the suspect, they were also shot by Jazmines wounding Cpl. Glen Isagon. The police negotiators tried to pacify the suspect, but the latter refused and continued shooting at the officers, prompting the cops to retaliate, killing Jazmines in the process.
The other barangay tanods said that while they were trying to save the three tanods, the suspect fired at them, preventing them to come closer to the three victims.
Barangay San Juan officials has assured the family of the victims of financial assistance.
