As expected, Banchero carried Team USA’s offense in its 99-72 opening win over New Zealand on Saturday, Aug. 26, at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

Before some 10,978 passionate Filipinos, Banchero stepped up and dropped 21 points on an 8-of-10 shooting including four rebounds and four blocks to lead all scorers.

Despite being a first-timer in the Philippines, the 20-year-old Banchero has heard all sorts of things about the country and what better source should it come from than through a close connection –– a family member.

“It’s been good. He texted me a couple of days before I got here, just telling me what to expect and welcoming me,” Banchero said.

“And then since I’ve gotten here, (Chris) sent me another text, (saying) “hopefully I’m on track to come to a game soon” and also meet up with my dad. He’s supposed to get here, my dad gets here next week. So, I think we are all gonna try to meet up and have a nice family moment,” he added.

Chris, who plays for Meralco in the PBA, has always expressed support to the younger Banchero and was the least bit surprised about his cousin being the NBA Draft No. 1 pick in 2022.

The Magic's Banchero is also the reigning NBA Rookie of the Year and has made a great account of himself in the senior level following his debut with the USA.
