Signal No. 2 up in two areas; 'habagat' to bring rains over parts of PH

PAGASA says 'Goring' continues to rapidly intensify

  • In its latest forecast, PAGASA said Typhoon Goring was spotted 185 kilometers (km) east-northeast of Aparri, Cagayan

The state weather bureau on Saturday, Aug. 26, hoisted tropical cyclone wind signal (TCWS) No. 2 in northeastern portion of Isabela and extreme northeastern portion of mainland Cagayan and forecasted that the typhoon-enhanced southwest monsoon or "habagat" will bring rains over the areas of Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.

In its 5 a.m. bulletin, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) noted that "the southwest monsoon enhanced by 'Goring' will bring occasional or monsoon rains over the western portions of Central Luzon, Southern Luzon, and Visayas over the next three day[s]."

PAGASA spotted Typhoon Goring 185 kilometers (km) east-northeast of Aparri, Cagayan.

It was moving at 10 kilometers per hour (kph) southwestward with maximum sustained winds of 140 kph and gustiness of up to 170 kph near the center.

Wind, gale warning signals up 

PAGASA included extreme northeastern portion of Isabela, such as Divilacan, Palanan, and Maconacon, under TCWS No. 2 (minor to moderate threat to life and property), along with the extreme northeastern portion of mainland Cagayan.

Meanwhile, Batanes, Babuyan Islands, eastern portion of mainland Cagayan, eastern part of Isabela, and the northern portion of Aurora remained under TCWS No. 1 (minimal to minor threat to life and property). 

PAGASA also hoisted a gale warning signal over the northern and eastern coastal waters of northern Luzon and the eastern coastal waters of Central Luzon. 

It warned that "sea travel is risky for certain types or tonnage of vessels over these areas." (Sonny Daanoy)
