'Goring' to reach super typhoon category; PAGASA may raise Signal No. 4

The state weather bureau on Saturday, Aug. 26, forecasted that Typhoon Goring may reach the super typhoon (STY) category and is not ruling out the possibility of hoisting signal No. 4.

"'Goring' is forecast to reach super typhoon category within the next 12 hours and achieve its peak intensity on Monday or Tuesday," the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said in its latest bulletin.

In its 11 p.m. bulletin, PAGASA said "Goring" possessed maximum sustained winds of 175 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center, almost reaching the STY category of 185 kph. 

PAGASA monitored the center eye of Typhoon Goring 135 kilometers (km) east-southeast of Tuguegarao City, Cagayan.

It was moving at 10 kilometers per hour (kph) and gustiness of up to 215 kph.

 

Hoisting TCWS No. 4 possible

 

PAGASA underscored the possibility of hoisting tropical cyclone wind signal (TCWS) No. 4.

"The hoisting of Wind Signal No. 4 is not ruled out should the short-term motion of 'Goring' remains the same," it said.

Meanwhile, the extreme eastern portion of Isabela remained under TCWS No. 3 (Wind threat: Storm-force winds), and areas under the eastern portion of mainland Cagayan, the east part of Isabela, and the extreme northern portion of Aurora still in TCWS No. 2 (Wind threat: Gale-force winds).

Moreover, TCWS No. 1 is still hoisted in Batanes, Babuyan Islands, the rest of mainland Cagayan, the rest of Isabela, Quirino, Nueva Vizcaya, Apayao, Kalinga, Abra, Mountain Province, Ifugao, the eastern portion of Benguet, the eastern portion of Ilocos Norte, the northeastern portion of Nueva Ecija, the northern and central portions of Aurora, Polillo Islands, and Calaguas Islands.
